The following table is both an Earth history lesson and guideline to technical
sophistication indexes used in fiction based in the Ring Realms and on this site.
This should be useful for writers of science fiction and fantasy as the data
provided (up to level 7 anyway) is historically and factually based. A fair amount
of care was taken to be general in terms of time rather than culture. Some cultures
made extraordinary advancements that simply weren't generally utilized until much later.
This is true of many Asian artifices that weren't really utilized until the Europeans
got a hold of them (and turned them into weapons).
NOTE: I am also integrating Kardashev classification into this level system. The Kardashev scheme has a much larger granularity:
The Kriar race depicted in the stories and novels are considered a level III civilization on the Kardashev scale. The older Jyril are somewhere between III and IV. It's hard to visualize a race harnessing the entirety of a universe's total power. The first-ones and their artifact, Starholme Prime, were an attempt at this. The Eternals (The Protectorate) can draw on the near infinite potential of the cosmos, but have have no means of directly distributing or utilizing that power...
NOTES: This chart is a significant piece of work but it does have one major acknowledged fault. The fault is that
it is based on linear next-step progression of technical accomplishments. Anyone who has even a fair knowledge of
history and science will know that human civilization went centuries at a time without progressing and periodically
experienced growth spurts where knowledge doubled and tripled in a short span of years. Even in the current day
accidental discoveries leapfrog our technical accomplishments.
By this token, a race or culture might achieve way down the chart in one particular area, but still lag way back in other accomplishments. The different accomplishments listed in the chart are also based somewhat on a curve. At a certain point, a technology needs an important revelation in order to bypass a particular plateau, so the advancements get reduced to micro-step refinements. Take particular note that my field of expertise is computer science. I would never claim to be a doctor or archeologist. My predictions in the advancement of biology and medical science are predicated on the idea that cybertechnology will continue to cross-over in its applications to genetic and cellular research.
Currently, this chart only has information up to level 17. Some of the biology/synthesis advances are missing
above level 12. This is a result of me running out of steam and the speculator running out of gas. If you have
ideas for contributions or corrections to this chart. Please email me or contact me in the forums. I would like
to one day complete this chart from top to bottom.
